The New York Mets drop third straight as they lost to the Washington Nationals



The New York Mets were defeated by the Washington Nationals on Friday night.  The game took place at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. and the final score was 5-2.  Jon Niese started for the Mets and was ok, his defense didn't help him.  The bullpen was pretty good and no player had more than a hit. 

Niese pitched four innings giving up eight hits and five runs with three of them being earned.  He walked two and struck out two and lost his third game of the season.  Carlos Torres pitched two innings giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts, Jose Valverde pitched an inning giving up two hits and he struck out one.  Josh Edgin pitched a perfect inning. 

Tanner Roark won his third game of the season pitching five innings and giving up four hits and two runs.  He walked two and struck out four.   Ross Detwiler pitched an inning giving up a hit, Drew Storen pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one and Tyler Clippard pitched an inning and giving up a hit.  He walked and struck out one and Rafael Soriano saved his ninth game of the season pitching an inning and walked two guys. 

Eric Young Jr. had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Daniel Murphy had a hit and drew a walk and David Wright had a hit.  Bobby Abreu had a hit and drew two walks, Lucas Duda had a hit and Anthony Recker had a hit.  Ruben Tejada had an RBI, Eric Campbell had a hit and Juan Lagares drew a walk.  Recker, Young Jr. and Campbell each hit a double.  The Mets were 1-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Wright committed an error and Young Jr. had an outfield assist. 

Denard Span had two hits and drew a walk, Anthony Rendon drew a walk and Jayson Werth had two hits and an RBI.  Wilson Ramos had a hit and an RBI, Ian Desmond drew a walk and Scott Hairston had two hits and an RBI.  Dobbs had a hit, Tyler Moore had two hits and two RBI and Roark had a hit.  Hairston hit a double and the Nationals were 4-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Span had a stolen base and Desmond was caught stealing.  Moore committed an error.

In the first Werth hit an RBI single, Ramos hit a sacrifice fly and Moore grounded into a force out scoring another run.  The Nationals had a 3-0 lead until Hairston hit an RBI double in the third to give them a 4-0 lead.  Moore added an RBI single and it was 5-0 Nationals.  In the fifth Tejada hit an RBI groundout and Young Jr. hit an RBI double to make it a 5-2 game.  5-2 would be the final score. 

The Mets have lost three games in a row, the two teams will play game two of their three game series on Saturday afternoon.

The New York Yankees shutout the New York Mets



The New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets on Thursday night.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 1-0.  Chase Whitley made his major league debut for the Yankees and pitched well, the bullpen was great especially Dellin Betances.  Jacob DeGrom made his major league debut for the Mets and pitched very well.  Alfonso Soriano drove in the only run of the game and each pitcher had a hit. 

Whitley pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up no runs and two hits.  He walked two and struck out four.  Betances pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up no runs and no hits.  He struck out six of the seven batters that he faced, Adam Warren pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up one hit and walking one and striking out two and David Robertson pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts and picked up his seventh save of the season.  The win went to Betances, his second of the season. 

deGrom pitched seven innings giving up four hits and a run.  He walked two and struck out six and lost his first game of the season.  Scott Rice pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two walks and striking out one, Jeurys Familia pitched to one batter and retired him and Josh Edgin pitched to one batter and retired him.  Jennry Mejia pitched one inning giving up two hits and and no runs with a strikeout. 

Brett Gardner drew two walks, Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and Mark Teixeira had a hit and drew a walk.  Brian McCann had a hit, Soriano had two hits and an RBI and Whitley had a hit.  Kelly Johnson drew a walk, Ellsbury and Soriano each hit a double.  The Yankees were 0-6 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. 

Daniel Murphy had a hit, Ruben Tejada had a hit and drew a walk and Centeno drew a walk.  deGrom had a hit, Bobby Abreu drew a walk and the Mets were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. 

In the seventh Soriano hit an RBI double to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead and that was the only run of the game.  The two teams split the four game series with each team winning both road games.  The Yankees are 21-19 and will now host the Pittsburgh Pirates in a three game weekend series.  The Mets will play at the Washington Nationals in a three game weekend series.   

Masahiro Tanaka and the New York Yankees shutout the New York Mets



The New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets on Wednesday night.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 4-0.  Masahiro Tanaka started for the Yankees and was brilliant.  Yangervis Solarte and Mark Teixeira each homered to lead the Yankees offense.  Rafael Montero made his debut for the Mets and pitched ok and the bullpen was ok.  The Mets offense only managed four hits. 

Tanaka pitched a complete game shutout.  He walked none and struck out eight and improved to 6-0 on the season. 

Montero lost his first game pitching six innings and giving up five hits and three runs.  He walked two and struck out three.  Carlos Torres pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with two strikeouts and Jose Valverde pitched two innings and gave up a hit and struck out two batters. 

Brett Gardner had two hits, Derek Jeter had a hit and an RBI and Jacoby Ellsbury drew a walk.  Teixeira had a hit and an RBI, Solarte had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Brian Roberts had two hits and an RBI.  Tanaka had his first major league hit and the entire Mets pitching staff is still looking for their first hit of the season.  Roberts hit two triples, Solarte and Teixeira each hit a homerun and the Yankees were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Ellsbury and Gardner each had a stolen base. 

Eric Young Jr., Chris Young, Daniel Murphy and Bobby Abreu each had a hit.  Young Jr. hit a double and the Mets were 0-2 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base.  Murphy had a stolen base and C. Young was caught stealing. 

In the second Roberts hit an RBI triple to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Solarte hit a solo homerun to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  In the sixth Teixeira hit a solo homerun to extend the lead to 3-0 and the scoring was complete in the seventh on a Jeter RBI single. 

The subway series will conclude on Thursday night with the rubber game.  The Mets have taken two out of the first three games.  The Yankees ended their four game losing streak and six game losing streak against the Mets.  Chase Whitley will make his major league debut for the Yankees and Jacob DeGrom will make his major league debut for the Mets.   

The New York Yankees pitching gets slaughtered in loss to New York Mets



The New York Yankees were defeated by the New York Mets on Tuesday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 12-7.  Vidal Nuno started for the Yankees and was miserable.  Alfredo Aceves out of the bullpen wasn't much better.  Zach Wheeler started for the Mets and he wasn't any good either.  The Mets offense showed again that they like Yankee Stadium.  Brian McCann had three hits for the Yankees. 

Nuno pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up seven runs on  four hits.  Only five of the runs were earned and he walked four and struck out one.  Nuno took his first loss of the season, Aceves pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up four hits and four runs with a walk and two strikeouts, Matt Daley pitched three hitless innings walking one and striking out three and Preston Claiborne pitched an inning giving up two hits and one run with a strikeout. 

Zach Wheeler pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and five runs with six walks and two strikeouts.  Daisuke Matsuzaka picked up his first win of the season by pitching 3 2/3 innings and giving up one hit and one run with two walks and four strikeouts and Jeurys Familia pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two walks and a strikeout. 

Brett Gardner had two hits and an RBI, Derek Jeter drew two walks and Jacoby Ellsbury drew three walks.  Mark Teixeira had a hit and an RBI, Brian McCann had three hits, three RBI and drew a walk and Alfonso Soriano had a hit and an RBI.  Yangervis Solarte had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Kelly Johnson drew two walks and Brian Roberts drew a walk.  McCann and Solarte each hit a homerun and the Yankees were 4-15 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Solarte did commit an error. 

Eric Young Jr. drew a walk, Daniel Murphy had a hit, four RBI and drew a walk and David Wright had three hits and two RBI.  Curtis Granderson had two hits, three RBI and drew two walks, Juan Lagares had a hit and an RBI and Lucas Duda had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Ruben Tejada had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Wright, Lagares, and Duda each hit a double.  Granderson and Murphy each hit a homerun and the Mets were 6-14 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  d'Arnaud had a passed ball. 

The Mets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.  Wright hit an RBI single and Granderson a three run homerun.  The Yankees came right back and scored three in the bottom of the first. Teixeira hit an RBI single and McCann a two run homerun.  In the third Lagares hit a sacrifice fly to push the Mets lead to 5-3.  In the fourth Murphy hit a sacrifice fly and Wright had an RBI single to give the Mets a 7-3 lead.  Gardner hit an RBI single in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-4.  The Yankees could of gotten closer but Jeter hit into a double play to end the inning.  In the fifth Tejada hit an RBI single and Murphy hit a three run homerun giving the Mets an 11-4 lead.  Soriano hit an RBI single in the fifth to cut the lead to 11-5, Solarte homered in the eighth to cut the lead to 11-6 and then Duda hit an RBI double in the ninth to push the lead to 12-6.  The Yankees scored a run in the ninth on a McCann RBI single to make it 12-7 and that was the final score. 

The Mets have taken the first two games of the 2014 Subway series and have won six in a row overall in the subway series dating back to last year.  The series will shift to Citi Field for Wednesday and Thursday night games.  The two teams have identical 19-19 records with the Yankees now losing four straight games.

The New York Yankees blow two three run leads and lose to the New York Mets



The New York Yankees were defeated by the New York Mets on Monday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 9-7.  Hiroki Kuroda started and pitched ok, the bullpen was terrible.  Bartolo Colon didn't pitch well for the Mets and their bullpen pitched well.  There was lots of offensive power in this game.  Derek Jeter and Yangervis Solarte each had three hits for the Yankees and Brett Gardner hit a grand slam.  Eric Young Jr. had three hits to lead the Mets offense, Curtis Granderson, Chris Young and Travis d'Arnaud also hit homeruns. 

Kuroda pitched six innings giving up four runs and seven hits.  He walked none and struck out three.  Alfredo Aceves pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs with a walk and two strikeouts, Matt Thornton lost his first game of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning and giving up two hits and two runs.  Preston Claiborne pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up three hits and a run with no walks and three strikeouts. 

Colon pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up 11 hits and seven runs, six of them were earned.  He walked none and struck out four.  Carlos Torres pitched to one batter and retired him, Scott Rice pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a walk and striking out two and Jenrry Mejia won his fourth game of the season pitching 1 1/3 innings and giving up two hits and striking out two.  Kyle Farnsworth picked up his third save of the season pitching an inning and giving up a hit and a walk. 

Gardner had two hits and four RBI, Jeter had three hits and drew a walk and John Ryan Murphy drew a pinch hit walk.  Mark Teixeira had a pinch hit after sitting due to leg soreness, Brian McCann had a hit and Alfonso Soriano had two hits.  Solarte had three hits and an RBI, Kelly Johnson had a hit and an RBI and Brian Roberts had a hit.  Soriano hit a double, Johnson hit a triple and Gardner hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 3-10 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Gardner stole a base and McCann committed an error.

Young, Young Jr., Campbell and Tejada each hit a double and d'Arnaud, Granderson, Young Jr. and Young each hit a homerun.  The Mets were 2-10 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Young Jr. and Murphy each had a stolen base and Murphy was caught stealing.  d'Arnaud committed an error. 

The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Wright RBI groundout.  Gardner hit a grand slam in the second to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead.  The Mets cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth on a d'Arnaud solo homerun.  In the sixth the Mets tied the game at four on a Granderson two run homerun.  Solarte hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to give the Yankees a 5-4 lead, Johnson hit an RBI triple and with Jeter batting Gardner stole second and an error on the throw allowed a run to score.  The Yankees had a 7-4 lead.  Young Jr. hit a two run homerun in the seventh to cut the lead to 7-6.  Duda hit an RBI single in the eighth to tie the game at seven and Young hit a two run homerun to give the Mets a 9-7 lead.  In the ninth Farnsworth was shaky but was able to close it out with some help from his defense. 

The Mets have now won two straight with very good comebacks.  The Yankees have lost three in a row and are only a game above 500.  The Yankees right now have some serious pitching problems with 3/5 of their starting rotation on the DL and the bullpen springing some leaks and having some nagging injuries in it.  The two teams will play game two of their four game series on Tuesday night.  The scene will then shift to Citi Field for Wednesday and Thursday night games.

The New York Yankees rally and then fall just short in Milwaukee



The New York Yankees were defeated by the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the final score was 5-4 in 11 innings.  David Phelps started and didn't pitch that well.  John Ryan Murphy led the offense with three hits and Mark Teixeira and Yangervis Solarte each had two hits. 

Phelps pitched five innings giving up eight hits and four runs.  He walked three and struck out one.  Matt Thornton didn't record an out and gave up a hit and a run, Dellin Betances pitched two innings giving up a hit and striking out one and Adam Warren took his second loss of the season.  He pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up two hits and a run with a walk and three strikeouts. 

Matt Garza pitched five innings giving up six hits and three runs.  He walked four and struck out four.  Brandon Kintzler pitched an inning giving up a hit, Zach Duke pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run and Rob Wooten pitched to one batter and struck him out.  Will Smith pitched an inning giving up a hit and struck out one and Francisco Rodriguez pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run.  He was charged with his first blown save of the season but he picked up his first win of the season. 

Brett Gardner had a hit, Derek Jeter had a hit and Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and drew a walk.   Teixeira had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Kelly Johnson had a hit and two RBI, Solarte had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk and Ichiro Suzuki drew a walk.  Murphy had three hits, Gardner and Johnson each hit a double and the Yankees were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. 

Carlos Gomez had a hit and drew a walk, Logan Schafer had a hit and an RBI and Rickie Weeks had three hits and two RBI.  Lyle Overbay had a hit and an RBI, Mark Reynolds had two hits and an RBI and Khalil Davis drew a walk.  Jean Segura had a hit and drew a walk, Martin Maldonado had a hit and Garza had a hit.  Jonathan Lucroy had a hit and an RBI, Caleb Gindl drew a walk and Garza, Schafer and Weeks each hit a double.  The Brewers were 5-14 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Gomez and Segura each had a stolen base and Weeks was caught stealing. 

The Yankees took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  Johnson hit a two run double and Solarte hit a sacrifice fly.  In the third Weeks hit an RBI single and Overbay hit an RBI single to cut the Yankees lead to 3-2.  In the sixth Lucroy hit an RBI single, Schafer hit an RBI double and Weeks reached on a fielder's choice scoring a run to give the Brewers a 5-3 lead.  In the seventh Solarte hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-4.  In the ninth Texeira hit a solo homerun to tie the game at five.  In the bottom of the ninth Reynolds hit a walk-off game winning single.  The Brewers won the game 6-5 and took the series two out of three. 

The New York Mets rally in the ninth and win in extra innings



The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 5-4.  Jon Niese started and pitched pretty well and the bullpen was pretty good also.  Eric Young Jr. and Daniel Murphy each had three hits to lead the offense. 

Niese pitched six innings giving up eight hits and three runs.  He walked one and struck out six.  Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched two innings giving up two walks and striking out two, Jose Valverde pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two walks and a strikeout and Jeurys Familia pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a walk and striking out one.  Scott Rice picked up his first win facing one batter and retiring him. 

Cole Hamels pitched seven innings giving up seven hits and one run with three walks and ten strikeouts.  Mario Hollands pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout, Antonio Bastardo pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up three hits and three runs with a strikeout and Roberto Hernandez pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and striking out one.  Jeff Manship lost his first game of the season pitching 1 1/3 innings and giving up four hits and a run with two walks. 

Young Jr. had three hits, Daniel Murphy had three hits, two RBI and drew two walks and David Wright had a hit and an RBI.  Chris Young had two hits, Eric Campbell had a hit and drew a walk and Bobby Abreu had a hit.  Juan Lagares had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Anthony Recker had two hits and Ruben Tejada had two hits, an RBI and drew two walks.  Murphy hit two doubles, Tejada, Young Jr. and Young each hit a double.  Murphy hit a homerun and the Mets were 5-20 with runners in scoring position and left 17 men on base.  Young Jr. had two stolen bases. 

Jimmy Rollins had a hit and drew three walks, Chase Utley had a hit and an RBI and Ryan Howard had a hit and drew a walk.  Marlon Byrd had two hits and drew a walk, Dominic Brown had an RBI and Wil Nieves had two hits and an RBI. Cody Asche had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Rollins, Nieves, Asche and Byrd each hit a double.  Utley hit a triple and the Phillies were 1-11 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.  Nieves had a stolen base and committed an error. 

In the first Wright hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the second the Phillies tied the game at one on a Asche RBI double.  In the fourth Brown reached on a fielder's choice scoring a run and Nieves had an RBI groundout.  The Phillies took a 3-1 lead and then added to that in the ninth on a Utley RBI triple.  The Phillies were going for the sweep and the 4-1 lead but the Mets scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at four.  Murphy hit a two run homerun and Lagares had an RBI groundout.  In the 11th Tejada hit an RBI single giving the Mets a 5-4 walk-off win.  The Mets were able to salvage the final game of the series and end their five game losing streak.  The Mets will open up a two game series with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Monday night.
